Adrienne Slaughter, MSW, LCSW

To the extent of her memory, Adrienne has been attracted to serve for the benefit of others in what heals life’s wounds of loneliness, loss, betrayal, illness, trauma, a sense of separation and alienation.  Social work is the epitome of empathy and sensitivity to others. Combined with the ability to analyze behavior through above par communication and listening skills, complemented with behaviors that are both ethically and morally correct, Adrienne has educated herself through an accumulation of personal and professional means to be aware of the diverse community that she serves.  Social work has been her passion and focus for the majority of her adult life.  Currently, as the Director of Student Success Programs and Services at Emory University, as a board certified Licensed Clinical Social Worker/Psychotherapist in the state of Georgia, she offers to students, staff, and clients, her  best in critical thinking, understanding, compassion, and theoretical knowledge based on 16 years of related experience in the field.

Acquiring her BA in Sociology from the State University of New York College at Buffalo in 1998 and her Master’s in Social Work from Augsburg College in 2010, where she established her desire to become a Psychotherapist.  She honed her skills in identifying with clients first and foremost in a most humanistic way as people, not primarily as patients or their diagnoses.  She then progressed to HealthEast Care Systems, Minnesota’s largest and most reputable non- profit mental health organization,  accumulating experiences as both a Psychotherapist and Clinical Care Manager working with adults with persistent mental health and emotional issues.

With an especially rigorous clinical training background, she versed herself in individual therapy, couples therapy, group therapy, family counseling, trauma based therapy and addiction. This challenging environment rewarded her with skillfullness in working with a variety of clients from diverse cultural backgrounds presenting with severe trauma and abuse histories, psychotic disorders, parenting issues, anxiety and mood disorders and stress management needs.

Through a dedication and commitment to high standards of scholarship, and the presentation of accurate information, she finds it a considerable benefit to continuing education beyond requirements of licensure.  To this end, she is also certified through the University of Pennsylvania in Prolonged Exposure which is an APA approved treatment for Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder, and is also being used successfully for treatment of depression and anxiety.  As of 2009, she has been a Health and Wellness instructor with the University of Phoenix. Through a combination of these experiences, and by creating a place of learning, discovery and growth for clients, she embodies the role of therapist as being a guide, support and mirror for the client.  Adrienne has helped countless individuals transform negative and maladaptive patterns and worries, to positive, healthy, and adaptive approaches and solutions, and witnessed therapy to be a deeply rewarding and transformative process.

Although possessing the personal characteristics, background, education, and experience required to succeed, Adrienne believes that a successful therapeutic relationship is most effective when expressed as a pure, honest and simple communication between client and therapist.  Her approach to therapy is much like her personality:  continued thoughts of positive healing, vibrant,  optimistic and calculated.

Adrienne specializes in Anxiety,  Depression, Trauma and Traumatic Brain Injury.
